Costumes

We are starting our costume unit this week. What does a costume do to help create the world of a play? What do they tell the audience? What does a costume say about the character who wears it? What does the costume do to help tell a story? How does an audience judge a character by looks or what the character is wearing?

  1. Costume design is just as important an element of a play as the lighting, set, and actors are. Costumes help set the tone, telling the audience where the play takes place and in what time period. An actors costume tells us a lot about them, it tells who or what they are, their age, ranking in society, and even their age. Costumes tell us a lot about the characters personality too. Costumes are a very important part of any play.

  2. Costumes help the Audience delve into the period of time the Play is set in. For example Grease, you said Ms. Chevan went to the librarys and looked through Yearbooks to find out what ppl in the 50s really looked like and that way they could cast the audience a saunter into the world of the 50s, or whenever. Tell the audience how "goofy" they may have looked back in the day compared to now. it defines they mood, social status, Importance i.e. main character aside from the dude who sits in the corner and says nothing. It could show trend changes like if you were to combine Grease with lets say RENT and show a transition from Greasers to NY Locals in a low income neighborhood. It could also show maturity. or in the case of TOMMY from Shelton High a few years ago, all of TOMMY's family were in color the whole play, and the extras weren't. They Judge them by how well the actors fill the characters mold and actually portrays, John Travolta did in Grease, the audience was captivated by that performance because his costume not only resembled a burn out, "gang banger" of the 50s (greasers). What the character is vital because lets stay on Grease, you dont want the actor wearing NIKes because uh duh they weren't around back then.

  3. The costume is crucial for plays. The costume directly tells the audience what the actor might act like. It also can help the audience guess what time period the play takes place in by looking at the costumes. The audience can judge an actor based on his costume because the costume will allow the viewers to predict what the personality of the actor is going to be. A costume can give the audience an immediate impression.

  4. A costume helps create a charecter in a play. it helps us understand their background, life style, ect. They let the audience get a better idea of where the charecter comes from. Costumes help the story by using contrast = interest. It also helps the audiance tell the main charecters from less important charecters.

  5. Costumes create the look of each character. An actor’s costume can tell the audience about many things such as their gender, social status, age, and occupation. They can tell us the time period its taking place in, and their personalities. The shape, color, textures can make an immediate and powerful visual statement to the audience.

  7. The costumes helps the audience know the character with out them even talking about who they are. You can tell from the costume what they do for a job, there age, are they a boy or a girl, or what is the year they are living in. The color of the costume could show off there personalities. The color of the colthes should show whos important in the show like if the main character wore a white shirt and everyone else wore black. You would know that he or she is important.

  8. A costume tells you a lot of the things you need to know about a character and the play. It can tell you the setting and atmosphere of the show. It also tells the audience the time period of the show and about the character wearing it. It can say that a character is young or old or brave or cowardly or any number of characteristics. It can say what type of person they are and where they live or hang out and how much money they have. The audience will make judgments based on what they see and they will infer things like how smart or nice the character is, and other characteristics.

  9. The costumes give the audience a visual aid of what the character looks like and they also tell the audience what the characters personality is like. The costume says about the character who wears it what the character is like, their age, and where they are in society. The costume helps tell a story by the way it looks, what is the time period and also the setting or place they are in. The audience can judge the characters moods, personalities, actions, and rolls in the play.

  10. A costume can tell the audience so much about the character, if they choose to read into it, which most viewers would do naturally. They can tell the audience the character(s) personality, job, class, age, etc. When the actor is put into a certain costume it is essentially transforming them into the character physically which is then put together with their acting skills to become the character mentally. This can help tell the story of the play by showing era (setting and time period) and the mood (sad vs. happy plot, etc.). The audience would stereotype a character based on their costume just as they would walking down the street. Once again, it is just natural that as humans our first impression is usually physical.
