Theatrical Lighting

I want you to think back to the last play or concert (or any live event that had theater lighting) you went to and describe it (at least a paragraph). Did the lighting enhance the show? Did the lighting help tell the story? How did the lights make you feel? Would you have done anything differently? What was your favorite part of the design?

  1. The last preofessional show I went to was In The Heights. The lighting definitely enhanced that show because it was very helpful in telling the temperature and the time of each scene that took place. The lighting was also done very well with that background with the bridge lights and the stars. The lighting for the blackout scene was also done very well because of the timing, and the cell phones and the fade in. It definitely helped tell a story and set the mood in each scene.
My favorite part of the design was the blackout scene with the cell phones. For the scenes that took place outside in the heat, I think that I would probably have made the light a little more orangy or yellow. I think that in the show they didn't use color for those scenes. I think color would have helped enphasize the fact that it was so hot out.

  2. Last Performance i saw was RENT and i thought the lights were spot on. they captured the actors expressions in a visual form that transcends the audience and casts them into an ambiance of emotion and decadent life style. so my answer to if the lights enhanced the show i would say yes. The lighting definitely help move the story along because without the drastic changes in color which in turn changed the mood and the spot lights the audience would be lost in translation about what was going on. the lights made me feel accomplished and moved by the not only the performance by the actors and actresses but the way that a simple light can change or elevate the mood of the performance merely through a visual aspect. Personally after watching the Broadway version of RENT i thought that the Orgy scene which was taken out of our version, would have been a lighting marvel and how the performers moved in the whole scene would have been simply amazing with the light configuration we had placed on the grind. My Favorite part of the design was installing the lights and knowing where each individual light shined and how i impacted the whole play, and then seeing the actual performance and marveling in my accomplishment definitely was the greatest part of the design, but for the main question probably when angel makes his/her major entrance and sings, the lighting used was meant to show how happy and care free it was and then the transition from happy to care free to his/her death and how not only the music but the lights captured that dramatic feel of how it truly is to lose someone so close and how bad it hurts

  3. The last play I saw was are school version of RENT. I loved the play just like I love the movie. The lights did enhance the show. The lights also help tell the story of the play. The lights helped by being colorful when it was a happy scene and dim and gloomy when it was a sad scene. The lights made me feel like I was in the play. No I wouldn't change anything. I loved the whole design

  4. The last show I saw was RENT at Amity, and I thought the lighting greatly enhanced the show. The lighting really helped to set the mood of an industrial area and it provoked emotion. In the sad scenes the delicate blue lighting made you feel sad, where as in the happy and up beat scenes, the busy, bright and warm lighting drew you up onto the sage and made you feel the excitement and joy of the scene. I would have added more color in the lighting for the sad scenes not just so much black whit and blue. My favorite part of the lighting was Angles scene with the flowers and disco theme because it was upbeat, fun and very Angle.

the last concert i saw was the backstreet boys =)
the lighting was very good, they matched it with every beat of every song. before most songs they would put on this little play, and the lighting they did for the scenes were amazing. i think the lighting made them look better. if there was no lighting it wouldnt have been as good as it was.

  8. The last concert I went to was a ozzy osbourne concert. The lights did enhance the show by the dark color lighting which gave the show that spoky effect, but they also had differnt color lighting for each song wich fit perfectly to the theme of the song they were playing.
The lights stayed to the beat of the music which was one of my favorite parts .Besides the fire that shot up and out of the stage which also kept to the beat of the music.
As much as the lighting was good at some parts I cant remmeber that much about it because it really didnt grab my attention that much and it also was a year ago.

  9. The last concert I went to was Fall Out Boy. The lights were bright and colorful. They went to the beat of the music. The lights made the show more fun. Durning part of the concert they would turn the lights off a use a spot light so then your eyes could look at the person who was speaking.

  10. The last show that i saw was In the Heights. The lighting was my favorite part o the show. It is the perfect proof that lighting enhances the show. It was spot on in every way. The fireworks and even the background were done with such purpose. The most impressive thing about the lighting was the black out. The city the show was taking place in had a black out so the lighting designer cut of all the lights. (also the mics were cut) He had the actors take out there cell phones and use them as lights. (very realistic) He them slowly let the lights up, slowly enough that it was unnoticeable. The lighting helped the story in those ways.

  11. The last concert that I saw was the Trans Siberian orchestra the group that sings Christmas classics with a rocker type edge. The lighting was fantastic it brought the Christmas songs to a whole different light. Most people around Christmas time would read the book a Christmas Story wrapped up in a blanket near the fire but I got to experience it was flashing lights, bold colors and tons of screaming fans.

  12. The last play that i have seen is the boys nextdoor and i remember a scene where they were having a suprise party. And i remember the boys turning off the lights and then when somebody came in they would turn the lights on. If the lights dident turn on and off the scene would be unrealistic. The lighting enhances the play especially in parts where mytra would talk about the boys and what they are going through and then the lights dim as shes done talking it enhances the way the audience focuses on that one character.

  13. The last show I saw was In the Heights. The lighting was amazing; it helped me understand the temperature and the time of each scene. Also the fireworks that were in the background were done very well. My favorite part was when they had the blackout, and they cut all the lights out, and used their cell phones as lights. The lighting definitely told me a story, it helped me understand the time, and temperature.
