The past 2  weeks we have been working on our scenic design projects.  Please answer the following:

What was the most difficult part of designing your own set?  What part of design did you enjoy the most?  In what way can you make connections from your scenic design unit to other disciplines you study (Math, science, english, etc.)  Did you like using the 3-D modeling program sketchup?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of 3-D CAD design?  Where did you research your play?  Did you simply copy another set or did you create your own design?

Please write at least 2 paragraphs and comment on 2 other students posts.

  1. I think the most difficult part was just having to know where everything is, and you have to place things a certain place so its easier for the actors to move around and get off stage. I loved designing the wall with pictures and lights and adding a spiral stair case, its those tiny things that make the scenery come to life. I could use sketch up for history for like world was 2 to show how bad it was or something like that. I loved using it because it made things so realistic and i don't really think their are disadvantages except the fact that it tries to correct you when you dont need it. I researched "My Fair Lady" on youtube just to get a visual idea on how the set should look. i made my own design with my partner we just got ideas like yeah their should be a grand door and a piano and books because Professor Higgins was rich but the hole set came from our ideas.

  2. The most difficult part of the scene was giving it minor details such as furniture and accents (pictures, lights, etc). Also mixing different colors on the walls and furniture seemed difficult due to the limited database of colors and textures on sketchup and on the internet the textures were challenging to find the “perfect one.” I enjoyed creating dynamic objects such as moving doors and windows. I think the scenic design process mostly deals with math. This is due to measuring the objects along with geometry and shapes. Sketchup is a great and easy tool allowing users to create many designs and objects. Sketchup is a free alternative to a CAD program which is nice due to its professional tools and visually attractive interface. Advantages of 3-D are being able to design a scene with actual sizes and dimension and being able to go back and fix the problems on them. The only disadvantages of using the 3-D program is not being able to take advantage of all of its features. I researched the play Peter Pan by seeing it at the Paper Mill Playhouse and looking at youtube videos. I designed my own set but copied some ideas from the real ones.

  3. Using google sketchup was very fun. I enjoyed picking out a play that was interesting and then adding my own ideas. The advantages of using this was that it gives you a chance to learn about new things involving technical theater. The first play i looked up was the play peter pan. What gave me this idea was when i went to see it last year, and thought it was very interesting. What we decided to do at the end for our final was the play rent. Seeing the movie of this i felt that it had a very good story and a very good set.

  4. I enjoyed making a set in Google sketchup. I made a set for Beauty and the Beast. I think that the most difficult part about using Google sketchup was trying to place items on your stage. I often times had trouble placing things where I wanted them. Also my computer was very slow which made it even harder. My favorite part about using google sketchup was getting to look at my 3D set after I had finished. I liked being able to go all around it and seeing what I had just built.
I can connect the scenic design unit to other classes like math. we are doing geometry in math and if I needed to get some 3D shapes, google sketchup would be a good way. The advantages of using CAD is that you can make things easily and quickly. Also you can tell if its to scale easier, but you cant always be as exact as you would like when you are placing items. I got my inspiration from the movie Beauty and the Beast during the will you be our guest scene. We just copied our set

  5. I think the most difficult part of designing a set would be putting everything in the right part and making everything even or equal to everything else. Like on google sketch up my set had 4 cylinders and they all had to be the same size and making them the same size was difficult. I probably enjoyed that we got to control and make the decisions of where everything goes. I could use google sketch up in geometry class because on google sketch up you use a lot of shapes and geometric tools that would relate to geometry. I did like using the sketch up, at times it was hard but it was a lot of fun and new. Some disadvantages are that we could not really make some of the things that we wanted on google sketch up that we wanted in it. But an advantage would be that we could make a lot of other things that we could not use on a regular stage. For our play we did legally blonde so we looked up the Legally Blonde: The Musical website. We copied the design from the musical of the scene when Elle Woods is outside her Sorority House. So we did the Sorority house as our scene.
