Introduction to Scenic Design

This week we will start our unit on Scenic Design. One of the main goals of the scenic designer is to help tell the story of the play with the set. In this weeks blog I have posted pictures from three different "un-named" plays. I want you to choose one of the pictures (please indicate which picture you are writing about) and tell us what you see. What kind of play is it? Where is the play taking place? When is the play taking place(1955? 2045?)? Go into detail to tell us what you see and what is the "story" the scenic designer is trying to tell. Write AT LEAST three paragraphs!

  2. I am using the bottom picture. I think this play is a play from something in the Bahamas or some paradice place because of the bamboo and diferent disigns like the walls and railings. I think this is a musical or acting play. i think it takes place in the Bahamahs in 1990.

The picture shows that it might be in the Bahamas because of the bamboo and other things around it. The walls might be made of something light like something you might find on a beach. i think this play would be an acting or a musical because of the stairs they can run or jump down from.

Also i think this would be around 1990 because the walls are made out of thin things so it wouldent hold together very good. If there were a storm it would blow the houses away if they were made like that.

The picture I chose to write about is the one on the top right. I chose this one because it is very bright and was the first one that caught my eye. I think the lights are very cool in this picture. I noticed that there are probably hundreds of lights shining down on the stage.
This set is very colorful and fun-filled compared to the other two. Also the stage is a lot bigger than the others so this allows more elaborate scenery to be placed on the stage. I think that this set was designed for a musical because there is a lot of extra space for the performers to move and dance. This set design also looks like it could be for a talk show or game show.
The story the scenic designer may be trying to tell is a bright and cheerful one. Not gloomy and sad like the set below. I think that the show on this stage is set in the 60's or 70's. It looks like a stage that the Dreamgirls or famous R&B singer would perform on. I guess this set could also be used for some sort of futuristic play as well.

  4. i picked the top right because it was the one that caught my eye first. i think it may be a musical from back from the 70s or 80s because it has that look to it.
The design looks simple but the lighting is bright and it is open for ppl to move around and sing.
The mood the scenic designer is trying to do i think is happy and bright and makes people feel overwhelmed.

  5. The picture i chose was the top right because it was very appealing to look at. The lighting in the scene enhances the backround and setting of the paticular play. It must take many lights to create this great effect. I believe this set is much better than the other two because it is brighter and seems better appealing to the audience. This stage allows the producer to include and incorporate many types of scenery.
This set is pretty much set like a musical because it has alot of room and the scenery looks movable. It could also be like those game shows you see on gameshow network which contain lots of space and many lights. I believe the stoy the scenic designer is trying to tell is a postive and successful one due to the many lights and the roomy set. This show could probably be set in the 70's because of its unique look, however it could be used for a play set in the future due to its look.

  6. hi its Ben,
i am writing about the last scenic design. i could tell that this scene is based in the medevial or around the 1800's. i can see this because is built in all stone which shows that it is set in the past.
Also, i think this is in like a like a dungeon because in it, there are many stairs leading up to doors. The shandlier is also all crooked which makes me think that the place wasn't very nice or enjoyable to be in.
If i was to guess what this design was for i would think that this play was like a Tale of Two cities, or that kind of theme. I wasn't quite sure what the barrels had to do with the scene though.

  7. I chose the top left picture because it was the first picture to catch my eye. The set is probably that of a musical taking place in a tropical place due to the bright blues.

The play is most likely taking place in the 20th or 21st century , but it could be later, such that as of a dream from Ancient Greece.

The scenic designer is probably trying to portray a scene under water, on account of the wave-like backdrop and the costumes the actors are wearing.

  8. The picture that i chose was the very first clorful one. I chose that one because it is very colorful, and it is a cool piece of scenery. Also, because i can pretty much tell that that play is going to be a musical, where as the other ones i cant really tell at this point.

I think that this play is taking place recntly, becuase of the costumes and the lighting. Also, beucase of how celver the stage and scenery is put together.

The designer of this play or musical is probably trying to evoke the audience and get there attention. Also, they are trying to show a specific idea.

  9. The first picture definitely draws attention with its bright blue setpiece. The stage appears to be an outdoor one, given there are trees near the top of the frame. It has multiple levels and is lit only by the lampposts on the stage. There is no orchestra pit, which would be bit of a problem if the director wanted to put on a musical (which I suppose is the case; see below). However, the orchestra could be hidden behind the stage, under the stairs, or somewhere else outside the frame of the image.

The design of the scenery suggests that the play is a musical: it has plenty of open space onstage to accommodate a large ensemble that is typical of a musical. The vibrant blue backdrop also gives the sort of upbeat feeling that one would expect from a musical (not necessarily true in all cases, but it seems that way). Further, the stage has multiple levels for actors to stand on, which allows for dynamic dance numbers.

The scenery is very abstract and gives a fantastical appearance to the play. It is not trying to evoke the image of a specific place or timeline; it is a presentational set. The blue and pink tones of the set give me the feeling that this is a play that probably takes place underwater. This point is further strengthened by the design of the light posts scattered about the stage: the pink heads look somewhat like coral. The backdrop is also painted with a cloudy, almost wave-like pattern, further giving an underwater feeling.

  10. The scenic design that caught my eye was definitely the first one. It has so much color and different designs and abstract artwork used within it. The play looks like it could be a fantasy thing, or something taking place in the past in the outdoors due to where the stage is set up.

The colors and patterns definitely give this a fantasy look. The flooring is rainbow patterns while the back wall is all different shades of blue which could represent water. This doesn't really look like something that could happen in everyday life, and I think that's what the scenic designer was trying to grasp when designing this.

The costumes the actors are wearing also bring the scenery to life. It reminds me of something that a tribe would wear, so this play could have taken place way, way in the past. The coloring and costumes are what brings this scenery to life.

  11. i am writing about the first picture. i like it because it has a lot of color and looks very much like a fairytale or a fantasy. The floor reminds me of a rainbow and gives the scene an even more fantasy look.
The wall also is different shades of blue which reminds me of a deep blue sky with a rainbow in it. I think that this scene is put together very well and it shows that the scenic desginer put a lot of thought into how he wanted the scene to look.
