Hi Class

Go to this website:

1. Take the quiz

2. In the comments sections please tell us how you did on the quiz.

3. We have just spent a couple of days learning about all the various jobs that are in the field of technical theater (Producer, Production Manager, Stage Manager, Technical Director, Assistant Stage Manager, Lighting Designer, Lighting Technician, Sound Designer, Sound Technician, Costume Designer, Seamstress, Makeup Designer, Property Designer, Scenic Designer, Scenic Painter)

Which one would you like to learn more about? Why? What is it do you find interesting? What are some of the challenges of that job? What is it about you that would make you successful in that job. What would you need to work on to be successful in this job?

  1. I did very well on the quiz i got a nine out of ten. A career that i would like to learn more about would be costume design because that is maybe something i would like to persue in the future. I find it interesting because there is so much to explore and so many oppertunties to create new pieces of clothing and or apparel. Some of the challenges of the job would be the amount of time allowed to produce the article of clothing and or accessory and what materials it could be made from and or out of. Many things would make me successful in this job. An important one would be drawing and using the computer because i am a good drawer and am very good with the computer. I also am very good at coming up with ideas and a very polite and respectful person which would help me communicate well with my fellow co-workers and with clients. Something i would need to work on to be succesful in this job would be public speaking because i get really shy and nervous when im up in front of a large group of people.

  2. When i took the backstage quiz i got a 8 out of 10.
I would like to learn more about lighting designer. I would like to learn more about this because I really like to have different lighting on the stage when im dancing and doing it myself would be really cool. I also find this interesting because just by using certain lighting, you can show the audience something completly different then just the performers on stage. Some of the challenges would be trying to get the lighting just right. If the lights are off even by a little, then the performers could look bad and the set might not be seen as it should.
I think i would be succesful in this job because i really like working with lighting and trying to get all the performers to look thier best. I also like choreography and this is a type of choreography but with lights instead of dancers. To be succesful in this job i think i would need to work on seeing the stage from the audience and performers perspective. This would help me to make sure that the performers are visible to the audience but also that the performers are not getting blinded by the lights. I think this could be a really cool job and i would really want to do it.

  3. I took the Backstage Betty quiz and got a nine out of ten. A job I'd like to be nackstage of a show would really have to be costume design. I chose costume design because I love creating outfits for myself and that's one thing the costume designer does. It really interest me because when you're working on a set of a play, you have to have a big imagination. And when creating outifts, you can go as crazy as you want and it will still be great for onstage. Just look at Edna's pink, feathery dress from Hairspray. It's totally out there, and still fits into the pay with ease. When you're a costume designer, anything can go. Another thing I love about costume design is definitely creating the outfits and being able to use any fabric in order to create something someone will be dancing or moving around in on stage. You know that whatever you creat, it will be seen by thousands of people.
A major challenge for this job, however, is making sure there are no imperfections. Just one loose hem or a pant leg being a little too long can turn a show into a disaster. Accidents happens, and no one wants to be known as the actor who tripped over their costume as well as the designer who created it. Another challenge in costume design would be making sure each individual costume fits every actor perfectly. Something about me that would help with this job would have to be I love creating outfits, as said before, and having my own sense of style helps with broadening ideas and imagination for costumes. Something I need to work on is spending time on the sketches and designs first before jumping right into the actually work. I would have to be alot more patient instead of just working fast, because if I don't take my time many mistakes can be made.

I got a 7 out of 10.It told me that i got the lead. I would like to learn more about the property designer. The reason why i want to learn more about that job is because sound similar to the scenic designer and i want to know what the difference between the two are. I also want to know more about it because i am interested in designing houses and things so this job sounds similar. To be successful in this job you need to be creative and have a skill in design. A challenge you would face in this job could be that things would not always come out as you want them to. Also to be successful in this job you need to be good on the computer and at making scale models of what you are designing.

  7. I got a 9 out of 10. Never heard of a dance belt. Oh well. I would like to learn more about lighting design. I find it cool that the lighting designer is a huge part of how the stage looks during a performance. A rock concert would be nothing without a good lighting design. I want to learn how to tell a story through the lighting and how to produce what I see in my mind. I'm have a very creative mind and and can visualize things in my mind but I would like to work on getting them out of my imagination and onto the stage.

  8. I got a 9/10. I didn't know that it was bad luck to whistle in the dressing room--I chose the "Irish play" under the assumption that the guys had mis-worded it and had intended to say "Scottish" (fat lotta good that did me >_< ). I would like to learn more about lighting design because it is a major part of any production, be it a play, movie, or even a video game. Since I'm looking into video game design, learning about lighting design could help me set up the virtual lights to create a certain mood for a cutscene or level (yes, video games are more than blowing stuff up). It could be tough since it involves describing abstract concepts, something I've always had issues with--I'm more concrete. But I do have a pretty good eye for emotion, so I might be able to do it.

  9. I received an 8 out of 10 on the Backstage Betty quiz. One of the jobs, within tech theater, that I would love to learn more about is sound designer. I am very into music, sound, etc. Without sound being produced during a play, there would be No play. If you are unable to hear the actors, or if they're too loud, the play/show will become either very overwhelming, or very unentertaining. One major challenge in following through this job is that of getting your cues correct. If the sound director is even a fraction of a second off timing, the scene within the play could be ruined.

  10. I recieved an 8 out of 10 on the quiz. One job having to do with technical theatre that I would like to learn more about is costume design because I think that beautiful costumes can turn a mediocre play extrodinary. Plus, I am very artistic, and costume design falls under the category of art. Something that makes this job challenging, however, is that somwtimes productions need intricate costumes in a short period of time, and give the designers a deadline. I would need to work at doing the best job possible under pressure, as when I am rushed I tend to not do the best possible job than I could have if I had more time.
