Costumes

We are starting our costume unit this week. What does a costume do to help create the world of a play? What do they tell the audience? What does a costume say about the character who wears it? What does the costume do to help tell a story? How does an audience judge a character by looks or what the character is wearing?

  1. A costume creates the world of a play by setting the scene.A costume explains the time period that the play is in and where the play is taking place. A costume tells the character's personality. For example a character that wears a bright pink dress is very upbeat and lively and a character that wears black is gloomy and always sad. The audience judges the character by what they are wearing by analysing the colors and type of clothing. For example if a person is wearing a sweater vest and glasses the audience analyzes the character as an intelligent but dorky person.

  3. A costume creates the world of the play because it shows what kind of person the character is and what their lives are like. It shows the time period, and the setting of the play to the audience. A costume helps show the characters personality. A costume can help tell the story because it helps show the situation that the character is in. The audience judges the character by what their costume is by seeing all the details that add up to make a fully formed character. Even if they don't notice everything that the character is wearing that help tell who they are, they will see the whole thing and get a sense of who they are.

  4. A coustime creates the world of a play by describing who each character is and setting the scene of the play as well. They help portray the characters' personalities. Costumes tell the audience several things, such as the time period the play takes place in, who the character is, and the mood of the play. Costumes help both tell the story as well as give an audience the ability to judge the characters. For example, fancy costumes would show that the character is upper-class and wealthy, while rags and such would show that the character is poor. Other characteristics can be easily shown through costumes as well.

  5. Costumes help show a personality. Just like in real life, our clothes can show our personality. Also, contrast equals interest. If everyone is in a white shirt and there is one person in bright pink, that person will stand out.

  6. Costumes are the most important thing in a play. Like in real life our clothes show who we are. A costume in a play is ment to do all sorts of different things.Draw the aduuiences attion, make someone more or less importatnt, or to show the time period in which the story takes place.

  7. Costumes can do alot in plays. they show:
    a time period
    personalities of the character
    mood of the play
seasons such as winter or summer

also, lets say i dress a character in leather pants, black converse sneakers, a KISS tee shirt, aviator sunglasses, stud earings, and have them carry a guitar and ipod, you can interpret that it is the late 2000's because of the ipod, they enjoy rock music and being rebellious from the tee shirt, shoes and pants, and the earing shows an act of individuality in that character. also, the sunglasses make it dificult to see eyes, wich can give away mood. if this person looks like they have no mood, they can somtimes be seen as "cool and collected"

  8. Costumes help tell the story of a play and show character traits. It can show the mood of a play, determine seasons, and year in which the play takes place. If a character is wearing all black for example the audience may think that they are in mourning or they are gothic. They are very two important things to know about a character, and you didn't even have to be told anything to know that.
