Scenic Design

This week we will started our unit on Scenic Design. One of the main goals of the scenic designer is to help tell the story of the play with the set. In this weeks blog I have posted pictures from three different "un-named" plays. I want you to choose one of the pictures (please indicate which picture you are writing about) and tell us what you see. What kind of play is it? Where is the play taking place? When is the play taking place(1955? 2045?)? Go into detail to tell us what you see and what is the "story" the scenic designer is trying to tell. Write AT LEAST three paragraphs!

As always if there is an issue please email me at robert.kennedy@reg5.k12.ct.us

  1. In the first picture it looks like it is a aquatic zone. To me it looks like it is the set for The Little Mermaid. I think the time isn't set, but it probably is more modern time it looks like the lanterns actually have light bulbs not flame.

Like I said I think it is taking place underwater. The set doesn't help the story much but i think the fact that it is outside shows that the story would be more rustic and rowdy than another.

The backround painting looks very unique like it is being projected and almost looks like it would move during the production. I could argue wether they look like clouds or waves but I think it is meant to be waves and water because the costumes in the picture suggest that

  2. Scene2:

This is a very detaild scene. In this scene It looks like a bowling ally. I can tell its a bowling ally because you can see the differnt lanes.
I think judging by the furnature this play takes place in the 1950s.The main focal point is the "v" hanging in the center. This is a thrust stage with a percinium layout.
The secinic designer is trying to get you to be in the position of the bowling pins.By having the gutters, and each lane branch off towards you giving the allusion that you "the audience" are the pins.

  3. In the third scene the design is telling us that the play is creepy and seems to be from an older time period then what it is now. The doors and walls are all faded out making the scene eeiry and scary. this play was probbably a horror because of the creepy design.
This play looks like it is in the time period of the 1500s because everything is so old and they didn't have the technology we do today. This makes the scene scarier because back then there were no lights so it would be darker than usual
THE PLAY LOOKS LIKE IT IS TAKEN PLACE IN OLD ENGLAND BECAUSE THATS USUALLY WHERE EVERYTHIGN WAS

  4. In the second picture I see a bowling alley set up with all the trophies and pins. This seems like a fun play with a lot of bright lights and mostly about bowling. It looks like it could take place anywhere from 1960- present day.

I see a lot of trophies to the side of the stage. I also see a big lighten up "V" which catches my attention immediately. A third thing i see is bowling chairs and pins.

  5. The first picture looks whimsical and fairy-like. The soft colors blend together sweetly and give off a sense of magic and wonder. The set is outside, so I don’t think that they can change the background at all. I think that’s the reason that they made the set the way that they did. The design that they have could be used for every scene because it doesn’t show anything in particular.
I think that this play is set a long time ago, like in ancient Grease or Rome. I got this from the costumes that the actors are wearing, but if I was just looking at the set I wouldn’t be able to tell the time period.
The “story” of the play seems to be somewhat chaotic at the moment. It seems like a scene with a lot of things going on. It looks like there are many separate conflicts and relationships, but they all seem connected. It fits with the mood of the background.

  6. The second picture shows a bowling alley, and it seems to be a rather fun-themed show. It is hard to tell what time this took place, but judging by the furniture and colors i would say around the 1960's.
The scenic designer made the set so that the audience is in the position of the bowling pins. He also made it so that the audience is drawn to the "V" automatically by making it large and centered.
The trophies seem to show that this is probably not being used as just a bowling alley for a weekend gathering. The show probably has to do with a competition of some sort.

  7. i loove the 1st one on the top. the reason is, i love the colors it makes me feel in my own wonderlad. making it feel timeless and can capture many emotions.
i like that it gives you many feelings and the people who are watchng can see from 3 different views .
you can think of any thing you want to with the scene painting your own canvas
