Scenic Design Week 2 DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 3/22/09

This week we start our scenic design projects. What do you think is going to be a challenge for you in this project? What kinds of things should you be looking for when watching the play RENT on dvd? Name three things you need to do before you start to design your model/sketch/rendering. Also set at least one attainable goal for yourself during this project.

WRITE AT LEAST 2 PARAGRAPHS!!

  1. I think the only challenge is going to be deciding what to make the scene out of. I should be looking at angles, colors, materials, positioning, scale to actors, and floor layout. I need to watch the movie and i need to actually get on task to do this, and finally i need certain materials and a due date to finish this scene design project. finish it by next week that way i can be all done and have time to perfect it. bang my two cents

  2. For me I can already tell that the most challenging part of this project will be making our picture to scale or rendering to scale. Math has never been an easy subject for me so I think drawing to scale will be a bit of a challenge. My goal for this project will be to draw a picture accurately to scale.

While watching RENT on DVD, there are many things to pay attention to. I have to pay close attention to everything that happens in the specific scene I choose. For example if someone walks in one door and turns the light on then crosses stage to sit in a chair and play guitar, I need to make sure my set design has all of those things. I would most likely put my door off to stage left because that is where the audience’s eye is trained to look. There would have to be a light switch near the door and a chair most likely placed in center stage since that’s where most of the action takes place, and there would have to be a guitar out and ready to play.

One of the three things I have to pay attention to before I even start on my design is what is used on stage; in the previous paragraph the light switch, chair, door and guitar. I would also have to put some consideration into where I would place these things on stage; stage left, center stage, stage rite, or up stage. I should also take into account the dimensions of my stage so when I go to draw my model to scale there is room.

  3. I think that making the model to scale will be a challenge. We have to make the scene realistic and usable and still make it proportionate. Also, replicating the scene the way we want it to look might be difficult.

When watching RENT, we need to look for props and stage directions. Each prop will need a place on the stage and the actors need somewhere to go and things to interact with. Wee need to look for items and actions that will give us clues as to where and when the scene is taking place. Three things we will need to do before we start to design our model are figure out the time and place of the scene, decide the feel we want the scene to have, and decide how we want the scene to look.

For my project, I think I want my scene to look like something that could actually be made for a high school production of RENT. I know that we don't have budget restrictions, but I don't want my set to be something that would be nearly impossible to make.

  4. I think the most challenging part would be picking a scene and then drawing it. I would lke to do the resteraunt scene. There are alot of things to have detail of in this scene. I want to do this scene because thats my favorite scene in the movie.

  5. The challenging part of this project is going to be making the model to scale. I have never done this before, and it seems challenging.
While watching the movie i will be looking for props and blocking so i can design acordingly.
Before designing my project i need to decide which scene i would like to do and how i would like to design it. either to make it like the actual show or to make it more realistic. Also i need to sketch it out and scale it. I hope to learn more about designing and how to scale during this project

  6. What I think is go to be the most challenging part fir this project for me is the designing aspect I not really an artistic person the best I can do is stick figures and a house.

Some of the things that I will be looking for while watching RENT on DVD are, the individual scenes making sure what ever scene I decide to do has the same set design as the scene in the movie or something close to it.

Three things I will have to take in to consideration before I start to design my model is, Figure out were my scene is going to take place, and the time our scene takes place whether it will be in the day time or night time , and deciding how I want the scene to look.

  7. What I think is going to be the most challenging part of this project is picking what scene and making the picture or model to scale. The kinds of things I will be looking out for when watching the movie is where the props are in the play, where they are located on the set, and the detail put into the scene.

Three things I need to do before designing my project is see the props and materials they used on the stage. The second thing I need to do is to leave myself plenty of room to put all the props and stuff in the scene because I am not very good at making things to scale. The third thing I need to do is see what I want the scene to look, so I can understand where everything is going to go before making my final project. My Two goals that I would like to set are to get this project done on time and to also make it look realistic.

  8. The thing I think that would be the hardest for my group is makeing are drawing look like someone would use it in a real play and to make it creative at the same time. When watching the movie it helped us look at a scene and now we can use what it looks like but make it look alot more "wow" because we get to use as alot more money.

Three things we need to do for the project is for my group is we need to look at the scene that we are doing and point out the most important props in the scene. The second thing we need to do is get a large paper so that we could make sure everything we need to put on the stage would fit. The last thing we need to do is to gather all of the materials that will help us make the scene. Like for my group we need magazines and color pencils.

My goal for this progect is that we finish on time and that we make the scene look fun but also like it should be use in the play.

  9. THIS IS KARI TARDY BY THE WAY, I DONT REMEMBER MY E-MAIL OR PASSWORD AND LOST THE PAPER I WROTE IT ON :]

The only challenge I think I'm going to have is the drawing part, my group decided to draw it out. i think thats a good idea but i am not so good at drawing. we looked for good details in the part of the play that we are doing. three things we did thinking before we made our sketch is, 1)we pictured it in our heads.
2)we made to sloppy sketches to get an idea.
3)now were thinking of how to put our ideas together.
my goal for this project is to get it all done by do date, and get a good grade.

  10. I think that the hardest thing for my group will be figuring out how to make everything proportional to the actors and the stage. Especially since Sam and I decided to make a collage for our project, finding pictures of things the correct size might be difficult.
Three things that we need to look for are all of the different characteristics that would make the scene we choose look different than any other scenes in the movie (i.e. props), . Another thing we need to look for is pictures to make the collage realistic. And lastly figure out how we are going to make sure everything is to scale.
My goal for this project is to get it done in time, which is often a problem for me.

  11. I think when the hardest thing to figure out for this project is what scene were gonna build. i often have a hard time choosing between things and this often takes longer than building the project. when watching the movie, im not gonna lie, i looked for the easiest set to build. Im still undecided but I think this project wont be too hard, because im going to be using google sketch to help design the set. im still a little uneasy about it because i want to be sure that program has props almost like the ones used in the movie. I dont want it too be to off from the movie and i also want to get the color schemes right. Hopefully I'll be able to do all this and have it in on time ( i always procrastinate about getting things done) and get a good grade. : )

  12. While watching RENT, im looking for scene changes, the content of each song specifically, how the actors move around the stage, and what the mood is during that part of the play. I think it will be difficult to really have a fool-proof set where everything has a place and works right without getting in others ways, as well as being there because it needs to be and isnt just useless.

Before we really get statrted, we will need to decide what scene we will do, how we will do it, and whether we want it to be very realistic or kind of funky. I really hope to make a cool, different, unique scenic design that will make people go 'wow, thats awesome.'
