Lighting

I want you to think back to the last play or concert (or any live event that had theater lighting) you went to and describe it (at least a paragraph). Did the lighting enhance the show? Did the lighting help tell the story? How did the lights make you feel? Would you have done anything differently? What was your favorite part of the design?

  1. The last live show I went to was actually this Saturday, an event the studio where I take acting classes held. I went to support my brothers in their acts along with performing as well and hosting a little bit. The lighting there definitely helped you focus on the acts. They kept the lighting low, about 50%, when the MC's took the stage. That helped to not confuse the audience with them and the acts. When the curtain was pulled, the lights went up but only on the desired spots where the performers were. This had the audience focus on them and not looking around, feeling lost. There was no story to tell because it wasn't a play or anything, but it did enhance the show. It kept your eyes glued to the stage, and that made sure you didn't miss anything.
Basically, the lighting was pretty general. It was just to keep the audience's interest, no fancy designs or fancy colors. And like all other lighting designs when you are actually on stage, you can't see the audience. That's usually my favorite part of the lighting because it's less pressure on the performer and you can focus alot more on what you're doing.

  2. The last live show i went to was rent. the lighting was very good and it really helped us to focus on exactly the right person at the right time. When the entire emsemble came onto the stage, all the lights would come on but when there was only one or two characters on, the lights were not as bright and they focused on one person. This helped the audience because we knew who we were supposed to be looking at when we were supposed to be looking at them. I also liked how there were many different colors involved in the show. It gave the show more excitment.

  3. The lighting went with the show. When the feeling was sad the lighting was black and when it was happy it was a bright color. The lights show the audience the feeling that the actors have.

  4. The last show i went to was Les Miserables. The lighting was very well done and really helped you to focus on the individual actors mood or the mood of the overall scene. The overall lighting theme of Les Mis was dark and smokey and the lights really helped set this overall mood. In one specific scene in Les Mis, The lights were focused on the top of the bridge which focused the audiences attention there, however what the audience didnt see was the scenery being moved down below,so in this situation the lighting helped as well. Overall, the lights made me feel involved throughout the play and really set the overall tone. My favorite part was that the lighting ques flowed well with the song choices and the way the actors moved onstage. So, If i was the lighting designer for Les Miserables I would say that i could have not of done a better job.

  5. The last show I went to that had theater lighting was HAIR. The lighting was very directive and told me where to look.It also made me very trippy, like hippies and relaxed, I also noticed they had alot of source 4s, they used lighting to create a moon which I thought was amazing and my favortie part. The lighting set the mood over all very well and I felt like I was participating in the play. If I could do anything differently it would be when in one of the scenes there were three spotlight but they all had the same color gels, I would have made at least one of them a different color to make that actor "pop".

  6. The last live production that I've seen was Hair. The lighting within Hair was very bright and cheery. This really added to the upbeat mood of the play itself. Also, the lighting was very direct. I always knew what actors to turn my attention to, and when I should look to the whole of the actors. My favorite part of the lighting design was when the moon appeared above the stage. The moon was created by the lights used, and it made their set/design look that much more creative.

  7. The last live performance I've seen was Hair on Broadway with my fellow classmates. The show is set in the late 1960's and is about rebellious teenager hippies trying to avoid war and anything threatening to "harsh their mellows." Throughout the musical, most of the cats members are stoned and dazed, a theme enhanced by the mellow yellow lighting and the patterned flowers and handprints on the walls. The handprints reinforce another key theme in the play: racial equality, representing all the handprints and uniqueness of the people of the world. A moon light on the ceiling ablso helped to tell the viewer what time of day it was. The lights, when yellow, make the viewer feel more relaxed and at peace, while the harsh white tones made the viewer know that it was a serious time in the play. If I were to change anything, I would have lessened the brightness of the lights, as it sometimes hurt to look at the actors. My favorite part of the design was the sunpainted as he backdrop, appearing different colors depending on the lights.

  8. Technically, the last show I went to was Hair on Broadway, but I don't remember the lighting too well because the show was a little chaotic (the cast kept coming out into the audience, which draws attention away from the stage). Instead, I'll talk about the second–most recent show I saw—or, rather, I was involved in: Les Miserables. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find pictures of the entire show, so I'm going to have to go with my experience and the photos I can see (after all, the Youtube vids are crappy quality).

The lighting for Les Mis was spectacular. It fit the entire play to a "T." Bright white light helped sell Master of the House and the wedding as comedic relief. Hues of red supported the hot-headed, raring-to-go rebels flawlessly, and the colors of the French flag on the cyc brought a real sense of patriotism to One Day More. Shades of blue and white added gloom to the already-emotionally heavy scenes, as shown in the picture above of Enjolras after his entire rebel force and he were put out of their misery by the French army. There really isn't a flaw in the show's lighting to be seen. My favorite part about the lighting was the use of the haze machine. Even fro behind the barricade, being able to see the beams of light coming down from the sky was awe-inspiring. It especially appealed to me because I had a flashlight with me every day: seeing the cone of light emanating from the end never failed to make me say, "Wow, that is freaking awesome."

So, I guess I kinda' liked it.

  9. The most recent show was Hair. The lighting was incredible as is anything else Kevin Adams does. The lights really help tell the story and were really awesome! My favorite part was the first song in the second act when all of the lights were going crazy on the background and then they all escalated and then "blew the system". It was really cool how they then used flashlights. The show is all about love and peace and having a good time. And the lights really help you have a good time because they are so bright and flashy and colorful. It really was an awesome design. One of my other favorite parts was the flag at the end how the light was just focused on the flag and the snow was falling. It was very moving and a great design!

  10. Hello, my name is Majla, I was born in Albania and came to America when I was 2. Some of my hobbies are chilling with friends, shopping, and acting. For clubs I want to join Asian club cause of the food, I also want to join anything with acting, or singing. I love playing volley ball as a sport, even though I’m not on a team I still play it outside or on the beach.
I signed up for this class because I love anything to do with theater weather its acting, singing, makeup, lights, costumes, i just want to be a part of it. And I have went to Broadway plays, and in my school we did plays. I enjoyed watching them very much because of the great acting, amazing scenery, and the plot. I am most interested in learning about make up. How you make wrinkles, and scars, its just very fascinating to me.
